America Online & Your E-mail
If
you have America Online (AOL) as your
Internet Service Provider (ISP), there
are some complications that are unique
to AOL.
There are four methods of using the AOL ISP and E-mail and E-mail programs.
- Non-AOL E-mail program & Non-AOL E-mail (for
example: using Eudora to send and
receive from Whateve@YourDomain)
- Non-AOL E-mail program & AOL E-mail (for
example: using Eudora to send and
receive from ScreenName@AOL.com)
- AOL E-mail program & Non-AOL E-mail (for
example: using AOL to send and
receive from Whatever@YourDomain)
- AOL E-mail program & AOL E-mail (for
example: using AOL to send and
receive from ScreenName@AOL.com)
You
should be aware that many people
consider using an AOL E-mail address for
your “business” E-mail does
not present a “professional”
appearance for your company.
1. Using an E-mail program other than the AOL E-mail program to read and send
your @YourDomain E-mail while connected to AOL.
Using an E-mail program (like Eudora or Thunderbird or Outlook Express) while
connected to the Internet through America Online is not difficult to do.
- Sign on to AOL using the AOL program, then minimize AOL.
- Start your E-mail program.
- To RECEIVE your @YourDomain E-mail, no changes should be needed in/to your
E-mail program.
- To SEND your E-mail, you will have to make the following changes in/to your E
-mail program.
- The outgoing mail SMTP server address is: smtp.aol.com
- The outgoing mail SMTP port is 587 (not the typical port 25)
2. Using an E-mail program other than the AOL E-mail program to read and send
your AOL E-mail (ScreenName@aol.com).
- To use some E-mail program other than the AOL E-mail program (e.g.: Eudora
or Thunderbird or Outlook Express, etc.), then please log on to AOL and go to
AOL Keyword: Open Mail Access
to find out how to configure your E-mail
program.
- This has nothing to do with your web site, or your web site E-mail accounts in
the form of Whatever@YourDomainName Therefore, please don’t ask me how
to get your E-mail program to work with your AOL E-mail accounts. Instead,
please go to
AOL Keyword: Open Mail Access
or use AOL’s Help.
3. Using AOL E-mail program to send and receive your @YourDomain E-mail
accounts.
- I don’t know whether or not it is possible to use the AOL E-mail program to
check your web site mail (Whatever@YourDomain).
- You could try looking through the AOL Help screens and do some AOL Keyword
searches to find how if it is possible, and if so, how.
4. Using AOL E-mail program to send and receive your AOL E-mail
(ScreenName@aol.com)
- This has nothing to do with your web site, or your web site E-mail accounts in
the form of Whatever@YourDomainName
- Therefore, please don’t ask me how to get your AOL E-mail program to work
with your AOL E-mail accounts. Instead, please use AOL’s Help or do some AOL
Keyword searches or contact AOL’s Tech Support.
