Children and your web site. An interesting topic, and potentially very dangerous, indeed. There are three aspects regarding kids and web sites. 1. You specifically DO want kids to visit your web site, because you are “selling” (at least in part) to kids. For example, you might be a school or a library or a church or an online music store or a toy store or a theme park. 2. You don’t care whether or not kids visit your web site, because you are not specifically “selling” to kids, but it doesn’t matter if they do visit your web site. For example, you might be a Real Estate agency or a new car dealership or a charter boat company. 3. You specifically do NOT want kids to visit your web site, because the content of your site might be considered as not suitable for kids. For example, you might be a gaming site or adult oriented. Consider having your web site rated/ranked by one or more of the several rating systems. Two such rating systems are: These ranking or rating systems act in a way differently than you might think. Instead of just being a warning system to help keep kids out of your web site, they also act as an indicator to show that your web site is “safe” for kids to come on in. These rating systems work in conjunction with the various web browsers, where the parents have enabled and set the content access levels or permissions.
An Important Reminder
If part or all of your site is specifically for audiences under the age of 13, be sure to follow the regulations regarding the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, COPPA or you could face huge penalties.
